Oxfordshire County Council Approves 20mph Speed Limit for Freeland Following Public Consultation

In a recent decision following extensive public consultation, Oxfordshire County Council has officially adopted a reduced speed limit of 20mph for our village. The move, which lowers the speed limit from the previous 30mph, aligns with the council’s ongoing initiative to improve road safety and promote a safer, more pedestrian-friendly environment in residential areas.

The decision comes amid rising community concerns regarding traffic safety, particularly for vulnerable road users such as children, pedestrians, horse-riders and cyclists and even more so down Pigeon House lane. The County Council held consultations that revealed public support for the reduction, with many residents advocating for the change as a measure to reduce the risk of accidents and enhance the quality of life in the village.

Oxfordshire County Council has been rolling out similar speed limit reductions across various parts of the county, in line with broader national and regional policies aimed at improving traffic safety and reducing emissions. By reducing the speed limit in Freeland, the council aims to make streets calmer and safer for all users, especially in areas where there is a high level of foot traffic or proximity to schools and village hall/ Playing fields.

The new 20mph speed limit is expected to take effect in the coming months, with signage and road markings being updated accordingly.
